Lay Down Our Burdens/The Battle Is God's

Stress is recognized as the number one proxy killer disease today. The American Medical Association has noted that stress was the basic cause of more than 60 percent of all human illness and disease. My husband was under a lot of stress before his heart attack. I find myself going down that same path as far as my failure to lay down my burdens at times.

I like to think of this song I sang as a teenager that goes, “Jesus on the main line tell him what you want, Jesus on the main line tell him what you want. Why don’t you call him up, call him up, tell him what you want. Why don’t you call him up, call him up, tell him what you want” Now, we call the main line the land line.

I think of dialing up my Heavenly Father on my home phone and talking to Him, and then I thank him for our conversation (that I have a direct line to the throne room of God) and that he heard my prayer request. The answer is soon on its way, i.e. the manifestation of my prayer. (Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Hebrews 4:16.)

I remember how excited my parents were in pretending like Santa Claus gave me a new bike on Christmas and when I would pop in their bedroom in the morning to wake them up, they acted surprised. My parents were more excited about giving me good gifts than I was receiving them, and it says my Heavenly Father is "much more" excited about giving me gifts than my parents! My Heavenly Father has a whole basket of goodies and I’ll take all that He wants to give me.

If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how "much more" will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! Matthew 7:11
And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. --John 14:13-14

I prayed about having Lasik surgery and on my way home from the appointment I just had this overwhelming experience of God's blessing on my life. I have been thinking about Lasik surgery for four years. I had a chance to share with a person who examined my eyes about the problems she is going through with the death of her mother with her step-sisters. She was telling me that Lasik surgery was invented for lasering microchips, but that someone came up with the idea of lasering eye balls. It has changed the quality of my life in not having to use glasses or contacts to see far away.

It talks in Hebrews 6 about “striving” to enter into his rest so sometimes there is a struggle/striving to come to that place, where we let go and let God. Most of the time I worry over finances. The biggest worry I had this last year was owing the IRS an extra $10K. I finally got that paid off in January through different means.

Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? Matthew 6:27

Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience. Hebrews 4:11

Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. Hebrews 4:1

It was Friday, December 30th at 4:00 p.m., when I remembered I had not filed my mortgage exemption with the tax auditor that was due before the first of the year. I was off work for the Christmas holidays that week and had spaced it out. I closed on the refinancing of my house just about a month previously. It was about a four month battle in getting my house refinanced for a lower interest rate. I was very upset because I knew if my husband was alive he would have not forgot. He was good at financial matters. I went downtown and it was windy and cold, but the clerk’s office closed at noon because of the upcoming New Year. So I went to my closed work office downtown and looked up the address on the Internet and noticed it said you could mail it. I stuck it in the downtown post office, prayed over the envelope, and decided to put a self-addressed stamp envelope in the envelope I mailed. Within a week after January 1st, I got back my envelope and it was stamp-dated December 31st even though their office was closed.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Philip 4:6

Sometimes I feel guilty about getting stressed out when God comes through for me on many things in my life. Sometimes I’ve seen some even more miraculous type things. Like when I saw my boat trailer tire flapping on the Interstate, stopped at the exit and noticed that the tube of the tire never went flat. I was taking it to a boat place to get it fixed and drove it across town from Lizton, Indiana to East Washington Street. The boat people were amazed about that also (that it never went flat when all the tread came off.)

I spoke to another widow who told me that the Lord showed her that “now I am your husband as far as taking care of us.” (Return, faithless people," declares the Lord, "for I am your husband. I will choose you--one from a town and two from a clan--and bring you to Zion.)

What I fail to do many times in life is I want to fight my own battle in life. I’ve got the armor of God like it talks about in Ephesians, but I’m trying to run from the battle, or I’m trying to fight the good fight of faith in my own strength. It’s says to “stand.”

(Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place Ephesians 6:13-14)

This is similar to Moses telling the children of Israel to “stand still” and there were other battles where God did the fighting for Israel with Gideon, Hezekiah, Jehoshaphat, Joshua, Abraham, and David.

Moses answered the people, "Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. Exodus 14:13

(You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the Lord will give you, O Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the Lord will be with you.'" 2 Chronicles 20:17) and (With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles." And the people gained confidence from what Hezekiah the king of Judah said. 2 Chronicles 32:8)

Jesus said his yoke is easy and his burden is light. I know when the yoke is getting heavy, it’s time to back off from what I’m doing and it’s time to rest in the Lord.

As a non-Christian I did not struggle against sin. I would steal, lie, and give into temptation there was no struggle against sin. God’s word promises that Jesus struggled for us and even died in his struggle against sin. He struggled for me so I can take on his yoke. (In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. Hebrews 12:4)

If I’m struggling, most likely I’m in the flesh and God’s spirit is not having his way in my life. (For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light." Matthew 11:30)
