Overcoming General Grievous in Our Life

I find that some people like to “get my goat,” at times, i.e. they like to irritate someone; to annoy and arouse someone to anger.  I read in a book a long time ago that “if a person makes you angry, they have mastery over you” so from that point on I sought God not to let a person have mastery over me.

It’s been working very well, because if a person makes a sarcastic joke or derogatory comment to me verbally which there are some people that like to do that, immediately in my mind, I say “Bless them Jesus.”  Than that thought of anger or hurt goes away.  I have even driven by some people’s homes at times and said, “God bless so and so.” If anyone has had to deal with an ex in a relationship, it is a constant aggravation especially if there are children involved.

Our enemy is a strategic general on the wrong side like General Grievous on the movie Star Wars, but God is the commander and chief.  I am not ignorant of his devises and one of them is to grieve and oppress me. (so that Satan will not outsmart us. For we are familiar with his evil schemes. 2 Cor. 2:11).

I noticed that the enemy liked to “set me up” at times as far as bringing people across my path like Job’s friends to make offensive statements.  I’ve spoken to other widows and men that lost their wives and they had the same experience.  So I said, “God how do I overcome these people who oppress me with their words in this grief trial?

"Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the alien or the poor. In your hearts do not think evil of each other." Zach. 7:10
"He will defend the afflicted among the people and save the children of the needy; he will crush the oppressor. Psalm 72:4"

The Lord said, “Say God bless them.”  I wish I would have known that earlier.  I prayed for my ex and so did my husband, but I never realized I should be saying, “God bless my ex.”  Some people think their mission in life is to be general grievous!  This is what the Pharisees did to Jesus!

Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you. Luke 6:28
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Romans 12:14
Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. 1 Peter 3:9

I had a person who was upset with me for letting a car in front of me in a construction zone and how I waited for this car in another lane.  The car behind me passed me and then they got in front of me, slammed on their brakes, gave me the finger. Drove up a little farther and slammed on their brakes and gave me the finger again.  I said, “God bless them.”  I knew who set up this road rage incident.

Jesus promised that we are not above our master, we are going to have persecution and insults from others.  Jesus constantly got criticized by the Pharisees and there are Pharisees today.

When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and talked abusively against what Paul was saying. Acts 13:35
In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 2 Timothy 3:12
Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Matthew 5:11

Next, there is overcoming oppressive thoughts and David said that oppressive thoughts are like bees.  I find when anxiety attacks come against me, if I just pray about the situation the anxiety leaves.  God showed me that I could have a lot of money in the bank, and then I worry about if I am putting it to the correct use.  Having a lot of money in the bank, does not matter as far as oppressive thoughts of worry can come against you whether you have $10K in your bank account or $10.00.

They swarmed around me like bees, but they died out as quickly as burning thorns; in the name of the Lord I cut them off. Psalm 118:12

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7

I find I have to commit my thoughts and ways to the Lord on a constant basis.  You heard the term need by need basis.  That is the way in our walk with the Lord.  It’s a need by need basis.  There is also a “need to know” basis and I find the Lord gives us wisdom on what we need to know at the time we need to know it.

No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. 1 Cor. 10:13
in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:6
Commit your actions to the Lord, and your plans will succeed. Proverbs 16:3
