You Got Mail

My Favorite quotes from “You Got Mail:”  My daughter Hannah has worked at Meijers in Avon for around 3-4 years now and she was telling me how people come through her lane on a regular basis, just so she will ring her up.  One lady brought her a Starbucks drink during the holidays, because she works the holidays.  My daughter reminds me of Kathleen Kelly on “You Got Mail” as far as she is a person who gives good customer service.  And I can only hope when I leave this world she will think as highly of me as Kathleen did of her mother and remember the “twirling” or how her and I went dancing together now when I am single.

Kathleen Kelly: [writing to "NY152"] Sometimes I wonder about my life. I lead a small life - well, valuable, but small - and sometimes I wonder, do I do it because I like it, or because I haven't been brave? So much of what I see reminds me of something I read in a book, when shouldn't it be the other way around? I don't really want an answer. I just want to send this cosmic question out into the void. So good night, dear void.

Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel's hand." (The seven lamps represent the eyes of the Lord that search all around the world.) Zech 4:10

I like that quote on Anne of Avonlea where she comes back to Green Gables and she says, “It’s not what you find in the world it’s what you bring to the world.  Like President J.F. Kennedy said, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.“  I know I spent two years traveling around in this missionary group and I just felt I wanted to leave my Green Gables at the time, but then I came back to Indiana for my parents when I went through a divorce, and was here for them when they passed away.

Kathleen Kelly: [writing to "NY152"] People are always saying that change is a good thing. But all they're really saying is that something you didn't want to happen at all... has happened. My store is closing this week. I own a store, did I ever tell you that? It's a lovely store, and in a week it'll be something really depressing, like a Baby Gap. Soon, it'll be just a memory. In fact, someone, some foolish person, will probably think it's a tribute to this city, the way it keeps changing on you, the way you can never count on it, or something. I know because that's the sort of thing I'm always saying. But the truth is... I'm heartbroken. I feel as if a part of me has died, and my mother has died all over again, and no one can ever make it right.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.  Romans 8:28

I’ve quoted that scripture quite often in the midst of tragedy and I quote it regularly now, “God how is this tragedy of losing my husband working for my good.”  I have not seen it yet, but You know.

Kathleen KellyWell... if he's not here, he has a reason, because there is not a cruel or careless bone in his body. But I wouldn't expect you to understand anybody like that. You with your theme park, multi-level, homogenize-the-world mochaccino land. You've deluded yourself into thinking that you're some sort of benefactor, bringing books to the masses. But no one will ever remember you, Joe Fox. And maybe no one will remember me, either, but plenty of people remember my mother, and they think she was fine, and they think her store was something special. You are nothing but a suit!
JOE:
That's my cue. Uh, good night.

Suit- in reference to the people who wear suits for work every day. Most often referring to people in government positions, but also those that work for corporations.  I was just talking to a friend at work how my mother had to send out my dad’s shirts to get dry cleaned every morning, he had to wear white shirts to the office every morning.  I know most people who worked for IBM had to wear a shirt and tie.  Now, most of us can wear more casual clothes to the work place in an office.

Cue- From theater, when someone received a signal and they would go on or off stage. The signal is called a 'cue'. In this case his signal to leave
