I think some people think that not fitting in is a bad thing. I look
at it as “coming to be your own person.” Especially, since it says that
God called us out of darkness into light.
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 1 Peter 2:9
I went through this season in high school where I conformed to peer pressure (the fashion police bullies), but when I was “coming into my own person” as a 13-year old that only lasted one year. I did better in the land of the misfits in high school as far as the more alternative kids (the rebellious), but after a while that sort of fell apart too when many of my close friends moved out of state. It was because God was bringing me into being my own person – not being a people pleaser. The problem with being a people pleaser is that you can’t please everyone. I went through the same phase in being a widow (single again) in “trying to fit in” with single groups. God called me out at the age of 17 years old to himself.
It really is similar to the Song of Solomon…”Come away my beloved.” Song of Solomon 8:14
How did Jesus fit it? Jesus was the son of God and he was sinless. It says he was a friend of publican and sinners. I look through the Bible and see Joseph was an outsider from his brothers. Same thing happened to David in that his brothers got upset with him for coming to the battle – just stay out in your shepherd’s field David…get the freak outta here!
I like what I heard Rich Mullin’s brother said at E91 Christian church one Sunday how at times he feels that he does not fit in anywhere, not even in his own family.
When God has a calling on your life there are times it’s like that, and it’s just a matter of digging your fox hole and settling in. My husband and I did that five years at where we were the only blended family in a small church. For me it was helping out with the children’s church, and for him it was teaching at a Bible study for 5th graders, and helping the teen minister lead socials in skiing.
We could dig our fox hole because although we did not fit in with any of the couples there in being a blended family, God had called us to be at that church for a season (for a reason for a purpose). To everything there is a season, a reason, and a purpose.
To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: Eccl. 3:1
It’s not coming down – Jesus did not compromise. He brought people up to his level (his vision). How did David take a band of misfit/grunting men and bring them up to his level? In 1 Samuel 22:1-2, we are given the account of David fleeing from Saul, who was trying to kill him. It tells us that David fled to the cave of Adullam. What’s interesting is that this account records that everyone who was in distress, in debt, and who was discontented gathered to him.
For a short time he had the support of Jonathan (Saul’s son) who helped him get out of the palace. We see that it did not always fair well for David and he felt alone at times, he said, “No man cares for my soul.”
I look for someone to come and help me, but no one gives me a passing thought! No one will help me; no one cares a bit what happens to me. Psalm 142:2
That bothers every widow or widower I’ve spoken to because they lost that “daily” caring of their spouse. For us with adult children, it’s a little better depends on if those adult children are married or not and very busy with their own lives. I made a concerted effort to go see my mom twice a week when she lost my dad. It was because I had four children at home and was busy with my husband. Just my stopping by after college classes twice in the evening, I know that was better for her.
The next verse is David encouraged himself in the Lord. He did not need anyone else to encourage him.
I cry to you, O LORD; I say, "You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living." Psalm 142:5
There are time I call in reinforcements and I sent a prayer request recently to a pastor because I needed more offensive linemen. There are times the “aloneness” in my life is so overwhelming (engulfing) and the Bible says, “It is not good for man to be alone.” Once you have been in a Christian marriage, you know what it’s like to have that partnership – that prayer of agreement and I miss my nightly prayer partner. It says that two will put one will put one thousand to flight and two will put two thousand to flight.
How could one man chase a thousand, or two put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, unless the LORD had given them up? Duet. 32:30
Each one of you will put to flight a thousand of the enemy, for the LORD your God fights for you, just as he has promised. Joshua 23:10
A thousand will flee at the threat of one; at the threat of five you will all flee away, till you are left like a flagstaff on a mountaintop, like a banner on a hill." Isaiah 30:17
We had the Colts quarterback Harbaugh for a while that did not like his offensive lineman, but than we had Peyton Manning who was a stronger quarterback. Sometimes it takes a stronger quarterback, but Peyton still counted on his offensive lineman to back him up against a strong defense. In Christianity, we have a lot of defensive prayers going (after the fact), but not enough offensive prayers going.
Sometimes we need backup – like the police need backup, like a airforce pilot needs a wingman and like a the military need backup. God is capable of sending us backup when we need it. He sent Elijah chariots of angels. In my grief, my daughters have been my “Ruth” in life and I’ve spoken to many widows that it’s a close woman friend. In the absence of my strong prayer partner there are people I call in to pray for me at times and “hold my arms up” like they help Moses arms up to win a battle.
When Moses' hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up--one on one side, one on the other--so that his hands remained steady till sunset. Exodus 17:12
God uses people. He chose to use Moses to bring the Children of Israel out of Egypt. Even Moses stretched out a rod to roll back the red sea. Nothing magical about his stick, it just happened to me a symbol of God’s power – sort of like electricity, you flip a switch. He could have just caused that particular Pharoah to die on his throne, but then another one would have raised up, and God chose to demonstrate his authority to the surrounding nations.
You are the God of great wonders! You demonstrate your awesome power among the nations. Psalm 77:14
God could have boomed his voice from heaven and saved the whole world. He did boom his voice when Jesus was water baptized and said, “This is my beloved son in who I am well pleased.” He also boomed his voice on the mount of transfiguration and said, “This is my beloved son, hear ye him.”
I don’t know why God chooses to use people, because it just does not seem that we do a good job at times. We are told to pray that God would thrust/force laborers into his harvest.
Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. Matthew 9:38
I have been “forced” into the harvest of spousal loss. I know that is the group I better fit in with and as I grow older, I will fit in a lot better. Being a widow at 52 years old was very young to be forced into that particular harvest field, but I know God has his reasons for matching me up (a calling) with a man who was going to have a short life span.
Each one should remain in the situation which he was in when God called him. 1 Cor. 7:20
