Pimp My Ride is a TV show produced by MTV. Each episode consists of
taking one automobile in poor condition and restoring and customizing
it. It’s taking a person’s car and making it beautiful (primping it)
inside and out.
My son had this Ford Escort that was like a tin can, but we had put a rebuilt engine in it. I was happy to get $800 out of it because he had a fender bender in the front. But this guy bought it and he came back for the title, and he had replaced the fender at a junk yard, had nice tires, and these fancy wind shield wipers. He treated that tin can like it was a BMW!
The Greek word for restoration, or restore, is katartizo (“kat-ar-tid´-zo”), which literally means…“To repair (literally or figuratively) or adjust: ~ fit, frame, mend, (make) perfect(-ly join together), prepare, restore.”
When we hear the word restoration most of us probably think of an old car, home, furniture, several hi-way projects of construction or a long-term project. My sister taught me to restore old furniture, how to sand it down, put putty in the holes, more sanding, stain, varnish or polyurethane, and sand lightly between varnish. Some furniture we can stain and varnish in one, and some furniture you buy unfinished so you stain it and vanish it yourself.
However, when we find the word restore in the New Testament it’s talking about people. Perhaps many men, enjoy transforming a rusted old frame they found in a junkyard into a sweet ride…God loves to take lives that have been abandoned on the trash heap of life and restore them to the Manufacturers original specifications! In short, the God of the Bible is revealed cover to cover as a God of restoration!
There have been times in my life, it was like a pile of cars in a junk yard, as far as I put a lot of investment in a relationship only to have it go up in smoke either in death or divorce, time and energy into step-children, a job, or for some their adult children won’t even talk to their parents.
The idea of God being a pimp is a little strong. It is a person that looks out for your interests and in turn they benefit. We are actually supposed to look out for each other interests in the Body of Christ.
Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Philip 2:4
Paul called us co-laborers with God (1 Cor. 3:9) or joint-heirs with Christ (Roman 8:17). God and I are in this together. Jesus is in my boat so if my boat goes down, Jesus goes down also. Sort of like the symbiotic relationship they had on Star Trek Deep Space Nine where a host would seek to live in a body, but it was a willing agreement, because it was mutually beneficial. The Holy Spirit co-exists with our spirit and bears witness that we are the sons of God. In him we live and move and have our being.
For in him we live and move and have our being.' As some of your own poets have said, 'We are his offspring.' Acts 17:28
The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. Romans 8:16
David said restore unto me the joy of my salvation. After Job went through his affliction he had twice as much.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. Psalm 51:2
After Job had prayed for his friends, the Lord made him prosperous again and gave him twice as much as he had before. Job 42:10
A scripture I claimed in going through a divorce is that God would restore the days that were ate up by the locust who devoured my life.
I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten--the great locust and the young locust, the other locusts and the locust swarm--my great army that I sent among you. You will have plenty to eat, until you are full, and you will praise the name of the LORD your God, who has worked wonders for you; never again will my people be shamed Joel 2:25-26
The apostle Paul encouraged his friends at Corinth to restore to fellowship a man who had been previously removed from the church for his unrepentant sin. It’s the heart of the Gospel message; the theme of Jesus’ ministry; and the mission of the Church!
Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should "restore" that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. Galatians 6:1
Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins and will raise up the age-old foundations; you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer of Streets with Dwellings. Isaiah 58:12
